APERI, Dómine, os meum ad benedicéndum nomen sanctum tuum: munda quoque cor meum ab ómnibus vanis, pervérsis et aliénis cogitatiónibus; intelléctum illúmina, afféctum inflámma, ut digne, atténte ac devóte hoc Offícium recitáre váleam, et exaudíri mérear ante conspéctum divínæ Majestátis tuæ. Before the Office is begun, it is commendable to say the following Prayer, the singular number being used throughout; for which Pope Pius XI granted an indulgence of 3 years (S. Ap., November 17, 1933).

Prayer

OPEN my mouth, O Lord, to bless thy holy name: cleanse also my heart from all vain, evil and distracting thoughts; enlighten my understanding, inflame my will, that I may worthily recite this Office with attention and devotion, and deserve to be heard in the presence of thy divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

O Lord, in union with that divine intention with which thou didst praise God on earth, I offer to thee this Hour.

OUR Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Blessing. May almighty God the Father be gracious and kind to us. R. Amen.

Lesson iv

AS is well known unto all, the glory of the Martyrs is celebrated by the people of God (such being the divine will) to this end, that to them due honor may be paid, and to us may be shown, by the favor of Christ, examples of courage; while then we behold these celebrations, let us understand how great is their glory in heaven, whose festivals are thus honored on earth; may we ourselves be stirred up to show forth the like example, an equal courage, the same devotion and faith: that so, Christ helping us, we may fight and conquer the foe, and thus having shared the victory of these Saints, we may triumph together with them in the kingdom of heaven.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Thy Saints, O Lord, have followed a wonderful path, keeping thy commandments, so as to pass unharmed through mighty waters: * Dry land appeared, and in the Red Sea a way without hindrance. V. Lesson v

WHAT man, desiring to partake of their reward, would not first set himself to acquire their constancy, to imitate their faith, and the courage with which they suffered; would not find, or seek to find, such glory by likening his life to theirs? For, though he were not able to resemble them in martyrdom, at least he might show himself worthy by his good deeds to be honored with so great a gift. For a most loving God is with us, and will grant to such of his children as desire it either martyrdom itself or, without a martyr's death, the heavenly reward with his Saints.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. The Saints of God feared not the stripes of the tormentors, dying for Christ's name: * That they might be heirs in the house of the Lord. V. They gave their bodies to torment for God. That they might be heirs in the house of the Lord.

Lesson vi

THOUGH a sinner is but weakened by adversity, it is in trials that the just man finds his strength. Thus did the Saints wage war against sin; thus, in striving they grew more strong, and in dying they won the victory. No athlete earns a reputation for great strength without a struggle, none is crowned unless he win. No soldier overcomes the enemy without a battle; none wins the favor of the emperor without going to war. Thou hast, O Christian, arms sufficient wherewith to fight the foe; thou hast weapons most powerful, with which to war against enemies.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. As gold in the furnace the Lord hath proved his chosen ones, and as a victim of a holocaust he hath received them; and in time there shall be respect had to them, * For grace and peace is to the elect of God. V. They that trust in him, shall understand the truth: and they that are faithful in love shall rest in him. For grace and peace is to the elect of God. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. For grace and peace is to the elect of God.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

GRANT, we beseech thee, O Lord God, to us thy servants, that we may evermore enjoy health of mind and body: and by the glorious intercession of blessed Mary, ever a Virgin, may be delivered from present sorrows, and enjoy everlasting gladness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.
