APERI, Dómine, os meum ad benedicéndum nomen sanctum tuum: munda quoque cor meum ab ómnibus vanis, pervérsis et aliénis cogitatiónibus; intelléctum illúmina, afféctum inflámma, ut digne, atténte ac devóte hoc Offícium recitáre váleam, et exaudíri mérear ante conspéctum divínæ Majestátis tuæ. Before the Office is begun, it is commendable to say the following Prayer, the singular number being used throughout; for which Pope Pius XI granted an indulgence of 3 years (S. Ap., November 17, 1933).

Prayer

OPEN my mouth, O Lord, to bless thy holy name: cleanse also my heart from all vain, evil and distracting thoughts; enlighten my understanding, inflame my will, that I may worthily recite this Office with attention and devotion, and deserve to be heard in the presence of thy divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

O Lord, in union with that divine intention with which thou didst praise God on earth, I offer to thee this Hour.

OUR Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Lesson iv

THE feast of blessed N., which we are keeping today, summons us to speak in becoming terms of his deeds. If indeed on this day this blessed one passed to a restful life, free from all disturbance; on this day his ship put into the haven, where there is no more fear of shipwreck, no more trouble or sorrow of heart. And what is there to be wondered at, if that place is free from all troubles of the soul, when Paul, speaking to men living in this present world, says: Always rejoice, pray without ceasing.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. The Lord made him honorable, and kept him safe from enemies, and defended him from seducers: * And he gave him everlasting glory. V. The Lord conducted the just through the right ways, and showed him the kingdom of God. And he gave him everlasting glory.

Lesson v

WHAT if here below we meet with diseases, persecutions, premature deaths, calumnies, enviousness, troubles, anger, covetousness, countless snares, daily anxieties; evils follow one another in perpetual succession, and countless sorrows press upon us on every side? And yet Paul says it is possible always to rejoice, if we raise our heads above the waves of earthly affairs, and order our lives well. How much better shall we fare, when we have passed away from this life and all these evils, ill-health, disease and occasions of sin, are taken from us; when there is no more mine and thine, those cold words which cause so much evil in our life and stir up innumerable wars.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. The Lord hath loved him, and hath adorned him: he hath clothed him with a robe of glory, * And hath crowned him at the gates of Paradise. V. The Lord hath put on him the breastplate of faith, and hath adorned him. And hath crowned him at the gates of Paradise.

Blessing. May God enkindle in our hearts the fire of his love. R. Amen.

Lesson vi

THEREFORE I rejoice greatly in the happiness of this Saint, because, though he has passed away from the city of this our world, he has been inscribed among the citizens of another city, which is that of God. He has departed from this Church, and has come to that of the firstborn who are written in heaven. He has left behind him the feasts of earth and gone to take part in the celebrations of the Angels. And, to show that there is a city above, and a Church, and feasts, listen to Paul who says: You have come to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the Church of the first-born, who are enrolled in the heavens, and to the company of many thousands of angels.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. This man did all things which God had told him, and he said to him: Enter thou into my rest: * For thee I have seen righteous before me among all nations. V. This is he, who despised the life of the world, and attained to the kingdom of heaven. For thee I have seen righteous before me among all nations. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. For thee I have seen righteous before me among all nations.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

GRANT, we beseech thee, O Lord God, to us thy servants, that we may evermore enjoy health of mind and body: and by the glorious intercession of blessed Mary, ever a Virgin, may be delivered from present sorrows, and enjoy everlasting gladness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.
