ENCE they, who worship adultery and impurity in their gods, have instituted penalties for celibacy and widowhood; out of zeal for vice, they tax virtue, under the pretext indeed of a desire for fruitfulness, but with the intention of abolishing the state of chastity. For when a soldier has served his time, he lays aside his arms, leaves the profession which he practised, and retires as a veteran to his own farm; both that he may rest after his laborious life, and that the hope of a like rest may urge others on to similar efforts. The aged husbandman also leaves the guiding of the plough-handle to others, and, wearied by the toil of his youth, now makes trial of the old man's task of supervision: it is easier to prune the vine than to repress its growth, that he may restrain its growing luxuriance, and cut away with the sickle its youthful wantonness; teaching that a certain chastity, of limited offspring, is to be desired even in the vineyard.V.

N like manner to this, the widow, as it were, a veteran of the completed service of chastity, lays aside the weapons of married life, but still governs the peace of her whole household. Though free from bearing burdens, she is still provident for the young ones of marriageable age, planning, with the wisdom of ripe age, what training will be most useful, where the harvest will be richer, what match will be most suitable. If the care of the field is given to the elder, rather than to the younger, why do you think a married woman is more useful than a widow? But if they, who persecute the faith, persecute widowhood also, the faithful should not shrink from widowhood as a punishment, but look upon it as a reward.V.
