BIBLES -- GREEK & LATIN BOOK FORM The best, quickest, and least expensive source for Greek and Latin Bibles is the American Bible Society. Ask for the Scholarly Resources Catalog. It contains listings for the: Concise Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains (Louw-Nida) Greek-English New Testament (Nestle-Aland 27th/RSV 2nd Ed.) Greek-New Vulgate New Testament Greek New Testament (Nestle-Aland 27th Edition) Greek New Testament (UBS Greek New Testament--4th Rev. Ed.) Latin Vulgate Bible, Editio Minor New Vulgate New Testament Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) Synopsis of the Four Gospels -- English Edition Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament (2nd Ed.) Synopses, concordances, lexica, dictionaries, etc. As to the Latin Vulgates, be careful about choosing the correct version. The traditional text is called the Vulgate (Vulgata), sometimes called the Sixto-Clementine Vulgate after the two popes under whom the text was re-edited in Renaissance times. This is the text that was used from the early Chruch and was originally translated by St. Jerome in the fourth century from ancient texts, many of which are no longer extant. There is now a New Vulgate (Nova Vulgata), issued in 1983 by the Vatican. This is a major revision of the original text, which went well beyond a current textual edition. If you want the original Latin Vulgate, particularly for citations in authors, musical texts, etc., be sure that you do not get the New Vulgate. The new text does not correspond with citations, musical texts, etc. An edition of the traditional Vulgate (Old and New Testaments) published in Spain is also available as the Biblia Sacra Iuxta Vulgatam Clementinam (1255 pages, Item #B728, $53.95) from the American Classical League. This text includes introductions, indices of key words, Old Testament texts found in the New Testament, as well as maps of the Holy Land, all in Latin. ELECTRONIC FORM American Bible Society The ABS Reference Bible on CD-ROM is an entire collection of Bible study resources, including the Greek Septuagint (Rahlfs Edition in the Michigan-Claremont transliteration), Greek New Testament (United Bible Society 3rd Edition in the Michigan-Claremont transliteration), and the New Latin Vulgate Bible (Stuttgart Edition). GREEK -- INTRODUCTORY TEXTS Allen, James Turney: THE FIRST YEAR OF GREEK (Star Publishing Company, 3rd rev. ed., c. 1994), ISBN 0-89863-172-6, 383 pages, hardcover, $24.95. Each of the 80 lessons is composed of an abundant group of classical and biblical Greek passages in prose and verse, with notes. Each progressive lesson is accompanied by vocabulary and a reference to that part of the separate thorough and concentrated grammar section to be studied for that lesson. There is a separate section of mainly English to Greek exercises. Greek to English and English to Greek vocabularies are provided and a grammatical index. This seems to me a very workable traditional approach to Greek and is better than Chase & Phillips in the number and variety of Greek passages and exercises. Balme, Maurice and Lawall, Gilbert: ATHENAZE: AN INTRODUCTION TO ANCIENT GREEK, REVISED EDITION (Oxford Univeristy Press, 1990-91). Offers a school curriculum that begins by following a fictional narrative about an Attic farmer's family and graduates to mythology, history, and extracts from Herodotus, Plato, and Thucydides. It combines lessons on grammar, presentation of new vocuulary, and essays on aspects of Greek culture. Book 1, ISBN 0-91- 505621-3, 288 pages, $16.95 paperback. Betts, Gavin & Henry, Alan: TEACH YOURSELF ANCIENT GREEK: A COMPLETE COURSE (NTC Publishing Group, 1993), ISBN 0-8442-3786-8, 342 pages, $16.95, paperback. The main part of the book consists of 25 units. Each consists of either two or three sections. The first is a grammatical section, carefully graded and in order to set out the basic featues of Greek grammar in a systematic and easily digestable way. The second section contains sentences and passages of nearly always original Greek for reading, to illustrate grammatical rules, and the third section is generally a longer Greek passage for additional reading. A key to all the exercises, as well as to a set of revision exercises, is provided. Nine grammatical appendices and list Principal Parts of Verbs, and a Greek-English vocabulary are included. Each unit includes grammar, vocabulary, exercises (Greek to English and English to Greek), and reading (sentences and actual short passages from Xenophon, Lysias, Plato, Aristophanes, and Thucydides.) This book is heavy on traditional grammar, morphology, and syntax, but with a heavily linguistic approach. Assumes a knowledge of linguistics. At a level for highly-motivated undergraduate and graduate students in linguistics, ancient philology, and similar subjects. The electronic workbook gives students ample practice and memorization drills and can be used with Mastronarde's or any test. Paine, Stephen W.: BEGINNING GREEK: A FUNCTIONAL APPROACH (Oxford University Press, New York, 1961), ISBN 0-19-501013-2, 327 pages, hardcover. Each of the 78 chapters contains grammar, new word list, a reading passage, and a writing exercise. This book uses the "inductive" approach, whereby the reader is supposed to pick up Greek by reading Greek passages. The first 38 chapters use St. John's Gospel for this purpose; the last 40 chapters use Book I of Xenophon's Anabasis). Pharr, Clyde (rev. by John Wright): HOMERIC GREEK: A BOOK FOR BEGINNERS (University of Oklahoma Press, c. 1985), ISBN 0-8061-1937-3, 361 pages, paperback. Each of the 77 chapters contains grammar, vocabulary, and reading (sentences and continuous passages from Book I of the Iliad with good grammatical notes). Also contains an extensive mini-grammar of Homeric Greek and vocabulary of Book I. An excellent introduction for those who want to bypass Attic Greek initially and start with Homer. Designed for students at undergraduate and advanced high-school levels, this book addresses the traditional parts of Greek grammar by incorporating modern linguistic theory and methodology. Basic Sentences are provided, which students and teachers use to explore the grammatical issues in a given chapter. Exercises and vocabulary are also included chapter by chapter, and these identify and strengthen specific grammatical issues skills. Matters addressed include morphology, principal parts, metaphrasing, speech-acts, and the kinds of kernel constructions. The volume also provides sections on verb forms, a stem list, Greek-to-English and English-to-Greek vocabulary, and sample readings. Williams, Frederick: ELEMENTARY CLASSICAL GREEK. Revised edition, c. 1991, 243 pages, Southern Illinois University Press, ISBN 0-8093-1795-8. Includes 24 lessons. Appears well designed and more succinct than most introductory texts. GREEK, BIBLICAL -- INTRODUCTORY TEXTS Beetham, Frank: AN INTRODUCTION TO NEW TESTAMENT GREEK (Bristol Classical Press, London, 1992; Focus Books, Newburyport, Massachusetts), 374 pages. Use Nom./Acc./Gen./Dat. order of cases. Reader from the gospels and the Septuagint. Unusual organization and appearance. Thirty sections in several parts, each having its own vocabulary grammar, and exercises. The whole often looks typographically jumbled, with numerous mistakes in the accentation and the paradigms. The explanations are clear and correct and show good pedagogical and linguistic sense. Exercises are natural and idiomatic, with the quantity of real New Testament sentences increasing until whole paragraphs are used. May not be suited to self-study. Efird, James M.: A GRAMMAR FOR NEW TESTAMENT GREEK (Abingdon, Nashville, Tennessee, 1990), 168 pages. A simple, attractive-looking book, but its explanations are often wide of the mark. The order of treatment is odd. Poor exercises: artificial, awkward, unidiomatic, and nearly meaningless. Goetchius, Eugene van Ness: THE LANGUAGE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT (Scribners, New York, 1965), 349 pages. Linguistic analysis and terminology are confusing. There is a companion workbook, which has no translation exercises from Greek to English at all, but focuses on isolated grammatical exercises. Hildebrandt, Ted: GREEK TUTOR MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM (Parsons Technology). A self-paced, interactive program, using sight and sound to teaching the basics of Biblical Greek. Covers the equivalent of a first-year course in Biblical Greek in 28 units, starting with the alphabet and ending with the first three chapters of the Gospel of St. John. Includes bibliographic references to four leading New Testament Greek texts. Requires an IBM or compatible with a minimum of 80486SX processor at 25 MHz, Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later, 4 MB RAM (8 MB recommended), 1 MB hard drive space, a CD-ROM drive compatible with Multimedia PC specifications, a 256-color monitor at 640x480 (minimum) a 16-bit sound card with MIDI (minimum), and a mouse or equivalent pointing device. Hewett, James Allen: NEW TESTAMENT GREEK (Henrickson, Peabody, MA, 1986), 256 pages, 15.2 x 22.9 cm, cloth, ISBN 0- 913573-32-9, $14.95. Key to Exercises, 32 pages, 14 x 21.6 cm, paper, $1.95, ISBN 0-913573-83-3. Ample, but sometimes explanations are misleading. Exercises are largely based on New Testament sentences, but have typographical errors, wrong accents, unidiomatic constructions, and use constructions not yet introduced. Hudson, D.F.: TEACH YOURSELF NEW TESTAMENT GREEK: A COMPLETE COURSE. Paperback, NTC Publishing Group, ISBN 0-8442-3789-2, $14.95. Does not include accent marks. Machen, J. Gresham: NEW TESTAMENT GREEK FOR BEGINNERS (Macmillan, 1923), 287 pages. This long-standing classic, at least in the U.S, shows its age in its style and has neither the advantages nor the disadvantages of recent advances in linguistics. Well organized, with explanations that are generally complete, but not verbose. However, the discussion of participles is inadequate. Exercises are plentiful, but often stiff and artificial, with little relation to the New Testament. Mare, W. Harold: MASTERING NEW TESTAMENT GREEK (Baker Book House), 251 pages. This text is a typescript produced on an IBM Selectric. Combines deductive and inductive methods. Lessons present grammar sequentially, but are linked to a Reader adapted from the gospel of St. John. The vocabulary is limited, and the explanations are unclear. The book is highly idiosyncratic in geneal, with charts and diagrams that are sometimes hard to understand. Marshall, Alfred: NEW TESTAMENT GREEK PRIMER (Zondervan, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1962), 168 pages. Uses Nom./Acc./Gen./Dat. order of cases. A cramped, pocket-sized book. Explanations are barely adequate. Exercises are few and perfunctory. Martin, R.A.: AN INTRODUCTION TO NEW TESTAMENT GREEK: A BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE GRAMMAR (Western North Carolina Press, Dillsboro, North Carolina, 1980), 208 pages. This text is a typescript produced on an IBM Selectric. It has reading exercises adapted from New Testament passages every few chapters and a Greek inscription (with translation) over every chapter. Explanations are generally sparse, but generally adequate. However, the book is riddled with typographical errors. The exercises are mainly invented, but most are natural New Testament Greek. However, they include some unidiomatic usages and sometimes grammar not yet introduced. Mills, Watson E.: NEW TESTAMENT GREEK: AN INTRODUCTORY GRAMMAR (Edward Mellen, New York, New York, 1988), 189 pages. Explanations are simple, but often simply wrong. No coverage of the vocative. Exercises are artificial, but not intolerably so, tending to be simpler than actual New Testament Greek. Supplemental readings from 1 John. Mounce, William D.: THE BASICS OF BIBLICAL GREEK (Zondervan, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1993). Volume 1 is the grammar; volume 2 is the exercises. A teacher packet includes quizzes tests, a key to the exercises (all available on computer diskette), overhead projector materials, and learning software (DOS and Macintosh). The book is padded with motivation and hand-holding. The explanations are not always effective, especially for nouns and participles. The exercises are all from the New Testament, though each is only a verse or two. Includes accent marks. Powers, Ward: LEARN TO READ THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT (William B. Eerdman Publishing Co., 1983). Uses a linguistic approach. Includes reading simple sentences from the Greek New Testament beginning with the second lesson. The book is intended for either a multiple-session class or independent study. Walther, James Arthur: NEW TESTAMENT GREEK WORKBOOK: AN INDUCTIVE STUDY OF THE COMPLETE TEXT OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN (University of Chicago Press, 2nd ed./1980), ISBN 0-226-87239-4, 208 pages, paperback, $23.00. Wenham, J.W.: THE ELEMENTS OF NEW TESTAMENT GREEK (Cambridge University Press, 1965), 268 pages. Based on the earlier work of H.P.V. Nunn. Uses Nom./Acc./Gen./Dat. order of cases; omits nearly all accents. The pace is leisurely. Explanations are generally complete and correct. Exercises are mostly invented and artificial, and some are nearly incomprehensible. Whittaker, Molly: NEW TESTAMENT GREEK GRAMMAR (SCM, London, 1980), 192 pages. Uses Nom./Acc./Gen./Dat. order of cases. This text contains little more than vocabulary, paradigms, and exercises; explanations must come mainly from the teacher. Exercises are generally idiomatically correct. Some are long and challenging, but often do not say anything that the New Testament is likely to say. New Testament references are given to illustrate each chapter's material. There is a key to exercises in a separate volume. INTERNET RESOURCES Classics Page at Ad Fontes Academy.
